Letter to the Editor! LETTER.TO.THE.EDITOR.
Now that it’s getting all warm and sunshiney, I don’t necessarily feel like eating a hot breakfast. What are your favorite ways to eat oats in the warmer months?
Thanks for your question! I must admit that my appetite for oatmeal in warmer weather is wholly dependent on the temperature of my shelter, and the task ahead of me. For example, when I stayed in an air conditioned house in Hawaii last year, I ate a huge bowl of oatmeal before kayaking 17 miles around the Na Pali Coast. However, rewind a few years to 71st street and Central Park West, to a walk up with an archaic window unit. I did not eat oatmeal that summer. I also hardly smiled. I do not heart the Upper West Side.
I’m back in air conditioned bliss, thank oatness, and I must say that while waking up to cool air makes me feel ready for a warm bowl of oatmeal, my mind has often wandered, of late, to dryer oats. I think we’re going to shift focus to granola. Have you, my precient readers, noticed that I have only reblogged granola recipes, whereas the rest of the posts are almost always a product of my own kitchen?
Confession time: I’ve never made granola!
Aiiiiiii. I feel so much better now. I have a few defenses. My mom - happy mother’s day - never cooked oatmeal, let alone granola, so I had to experiment outside of the home, usually with prepared goodness. Also, my relationship with granola is complicated. When I finally tasted it, I couldn’t get enough, and was completely addicted to the combination of granola and greek yogurt. ADDICTED. I’d eat it for breakfast, lunch, and sometimes, yes, I’ll admit it, dinner. Too much of anything is bad, let alone sugary, store bought granola.
So, my dear reader, I’ll continue to eat oatmeal, and experiment with granola. I can also envision a lot of leftover crumbles consumed the next day, over yogurt. Whatever weather may come, oats will reign supreme!
xx,
Alexis and Rosie
